[Hank Hill voice] Okay people, I’m going to explain some complicated stuff, so don’t start asking me a bunch of questions - I'm not a doctor. [Turn off Hank] I crack up every time I think of Hank's voice. I hope you enjoyed my disclaimer.
I've been reluctant to publish this blog, because I'm not an expert, but I've spent a lot of time reading and listening to great information to understand the process for myself. Clarity has made me thirsty for knowledge and curious about what is next for me.
Did you know, food is turned into glucose that goes into your bloodstream? I guess I did too, but I didn't realize that eating wakes up your pancreas. Think of smelling cookies baking. You gotta investigate the smell, right? So does the pancreas, it starts making insulin, and that insulin delivers glucose into the body’s cells. I guess I didn't think about every thing inside my body needing fuel to function and glucose is the body’s main fuel source.
Sooo, what if you wanted to burn stored fat, instead of using glucose? Here’s where the Ketogenic diet comes in. The diet gets its name from the induced state called ketosis. By lowering your carb intake, your body must adapt to use fats as its primary fuel source. Then, it’s the liver’s job to convert fatty acids into ketones, which your cells will now use for energy. Remember, your body LOVES glucose and now your replacing it with a new & improved energy source, fat.
Starting any new process can be daunting and can take awhile, before it becomes a habit. Getting into ketosis is new territory for your body, so you can expect it will take some time to adapt. Getting into ketosis differs for everyone, but I would say don't rush, I mean really, there's no magic pill to get you to your goals in life. Every journey takes time.
A keto diet is great for weight loss, but thats not all!
Here are some other amazing benefits:
- Mental clarity and reduced brain fog
- Lowered inflammatory response
- Healthy stress response
- Balanced hormones
- Reduced cravings and hunger
- Clearer skin and anti-aging benefits
For me, its been a gradual process of exploring different options, but I fully committed to a keto diet in January. This time around, I'm focused on health first vs. weight loss, but since December 8th I've lost 17 pounds. I would like to note that I am not restricting my calories. I'm eating 1900+ calories a day and if you been keeping up with me, you know I got a problem with heavy cream and coffee.
In addition, I've put slim to no effort into moving or exercising. Yes, I know that makes me sound like a loser, but It's winter! I'm not a fan of gyms or clubs, I prefer to be outside...walking. Taking in the fresh air and enjoying the space. I love looking at the sky, clouds, birds, hills, trees, grass, flowers and Murph's cute dog butt in front of me. I can say that I am super excited for the weather to warm up so I can hit the outdoors! If fact, I'm preparing for spring weather, I ordered Murph a full body rain suit. April showers brings May flowers, it also means Murph's a hot mess when we come in from a walk. Trust, I will be posting to Insta.
My family has always prepare nightly meals, so cooking on keto isn't difficult for me. It usually takes 30 minutes or so to prepare some kind of chicken, pork or beef with some steamed veggies. If I'm starved, I eat something simple like a salad or my favorite; eggs, bacon and avocado. For those who eat out often, you can prep weekly snacks and/or meals on the weekend. Keto isn't hard, it's as simple as you need it to be or as difficult as you want it to be.
I eat foods that I love and keto is changing my life in such an positive way! I can't imagine going back to a standard American diet. Mind, body and spirit, I'm the best version of me that I have ever been in my life.
As always, Thank you for reading! Next week, I'm back to my usual shenanigans! Let me know if you liked this blog and be sure to share the love!
